Overbet in Poker: Betting More Than the Pot, and Why It Became a Weapon

Betting 120, 150, 200% of the pot: the overbet. The ultra-polarized weapon popularized by solvers — when it prints, on which boards, and how to respond without panicking.

Poker glossary definition card

An overbet is a bet larger than the pot — 120, 150, sometimes 200%. Long seen as a maniac's move, it became a standard weapon once solvers demonstrated its power… in the right spots.

The logic: maximum polarization

An overbet says one thing: “nuts or bluff, nothing in between”. It's deployed when your range holds the very best possible hands and the opposing range is capped — the opponent then faces poker's worst dilemma at the highest price. A medium hand never overbets: not strong enough for value, not dead enough to bluff.

Where the overbet prints

  • Turns and rivers where your range keeps all the monsters and his keeps none (the card that completes YOUR draw, not his).
  • In position, with the initiative, on dry boards where his check caps his range.
  • With blocker bluffs: hands that block his calls make the overbet credible and profitable.

Responding without panicking

Facing an overbet, your medium bluff-catchers suffer — that's the point. The reading grid: is this player CAPABLE of bluffing here, and does your hand block his value? Against the low-stakes population, which only overbets value, the disciplined fold is king. The concept is studied in the postflop hub, and drilled under real conditions in the PokGenius Trainer.
