The C-Bet in Poker: When to Continuation Bet (and When to Stop)

You raise preflop, one player calls, the flop lands — now what? The continuation bet is poker's most frequent postflop decision. It's also where losing players leak the most: auto-c-betting every board, random sizings, no idea when to stop. Let's clean it up.

What exactly is a c-bet?

A continuation bet is a bet from the player who had the preflop initiative — you raised before the flop, you bet the flop, whether you hit it or not. Its power comes from exactly that: your opponent doesn't know whether the flop helped you, and statistically he misses it two times out of three. Your range advantage plus his fold probability makes the bet profitable far beyond your made hands.

Why the c-bet prints — the two engines

• Range advantage: on most high boards (ace-high, king-high), the raiser's range owns the best possible hands — your opponent has to respect the bet.
• Fold equity: the preflop caller misses the flop about two-thirds of the time. A small bet that folds out all his air prints money even when you've missed too.

Which boards to bet (and at what size)

The question isn't “did I hit?” but “which board favors which range?”. On a dry, high board (A-7-2 rainbow) the raiser's range dominates: bet often and small — a third of the pot does the job, your opponent can't fight back. On a low, connected board (7-6-5 two-tone) the caller's range is the one that connected: bet selectively, bigger when you do, and check much more. Sizing follows the logic: small sizes on boards you bet often, big sizes on boards you bet rarely but hard.

When NOT to c-bet

• Boards that smash the caller's range (middling connected cards) when you hold no equity.
• Out of position against good players who punish light c-bets with check-raises.
• Multiway pots: with three or more players, fold equity collapses — bet for value, not folds.
• Medium showdown-value hands (second pair): they usually prefer pot control.

The classic mistake: the auto-c-bet

C-betting 100% “because I had the initiative” was profitable fifteen years ago. Today, competent players check-raise unfavorable boards and float automatic bets. The systematic c-bet has become a measurable leak. The right frequency depends on board, position and ranges — exactly what solver solutions encode, board by board.
