Fold Equity: The Invisible Half of Every Bet

Every bet wins two ways: at showdown, or when the opponent folds. Fold equity — the value of his folds — explained, computed, and where it weighs most.

Poker glossary definition card

Fold equity is the share of a bet's value that comes from the possibility that your opponent FOLDS. Every aggressive bet wins through two paths — showdown or the opposing fold — and the second is invisible on your cards but very real in your results.

The idea in one equation

A bet's value ≈ (probability he folds × the pot) + (probability he calls × your equity in the final pot). The first term IS fold equity: money won without showing your cards. That's why a weak hand can bet profitably — not because it wins showdowns, but because he folds often enough.

Where it weighs most

  • The semi-bluff: a betting draw combines TWO ways to win — he folds now, or you hit your flush. It's the engine of postflop aggression.
  • The short stack: at short stacks, the shove lives on fold equity — the heart of our push-or-fold method.
  • Light 3-bets: their profitability comes first from preflop folds, not from showdowns won.

The classic mistake

Counting on fold equity that doesn't exist: bluffing players who never fold, or shoving so short that everyone calls. Fold equity is measured against the opponent and the context — and it's trained on real hands in the PokGenius Trainer, where every spot prices what his folds are really worth.
