Poker Rules: How a Hand Plays Out, Explained Simply

Poker has a reputation for being complicated — it's undeserved. The rules of Texas Hold'em, the flagship variant, take ten minutes to learn: two cards for you, five on the table, betting rounds in between. What takes a lifetime is playing WELL — but that's the rest of this blog. Here: the rules, all the rules, nothing but the rules.

The goal of the game

Win the pot — all the chips wagered in the hand. There are exactly two ways to do it: show the best five-card hand at showdown, or make every opponent fold before it. The second happens far more often than the first, which is what makes poker a game of decisions more than a game of cards.

The table: button, blinds, cards

Every hand starts with two forced bets: the small blind and the big blind, posted by the two players left of the button — a disc that moves one seat clockwise each hand and sets the order of play. Each player then receives two private cards, face down. Those are yours alone; the five community cards that will land in the middle belong to everyone.

How a hand plays out, step by step

1. Preflop: everyone gets their two cards. First betting round, starting left of the big blind.
2. The flop: three community cards are revealed. Second betting round, starting left of the button.
3. The turn: a fourth community card. Third betting round.
4. The river: the fifth and final community card. Last betting round.
5. The showdown: if two or more players remain, they reveal their cards — the best five-card hand wins the pot.

The five possible actions

• Check: pass the action without betting — only possible if nobody has bet yet this round.
• Bet: put in the first wager of a betting round.
• Call: match the current bet to stay in the hand.
• Raise: match the current bet AND increase it (by at least the size of the previous raise).
• Fold: throw your cards away and give up the hand — and the pot.

The showdown: who wins?

At showdown, each player makes the best possible FIVE-card hand, combining their two private cards with the five on the board in any way. The hierarchy runs from high card up to the royal flush — we've written a full reference on hand rankings and every tie-breaker case; keep it handy until the hierarchy is a reflex. If the best hands are strictly identical, the pot is split.
