PKO Poker Strategy: How Bounties Change Every Decision

PKOs have become THE dominant online tournament format — and the format where the biggest mistakes get made. The reason is simple: most players apply their classic MTT strategy while bounties quietly reprice every decision. Players who can convert a bounty into chips print money against players who can't. This article moves you to the right side of that trade.

How a PKO works

In a progressive knockout, your buy-in is split in half: one half feeds the regular prize pool, the other becomes your bounty — the price on your head. Eliminate a player and you instantly cash half their bounty, while the other half is added to yours. Heads get more expensive as the tournament runs: late-stage big stacks often carry bounties worth several buy-ins.

Why bounties widen your calls

This is the format's core principle: when you can eliminate a player, their bounty is money already sitting in the middle — a bonus you collect on top of the pot. Your price improves. A borderline call in a classic MTT becomes clearly profitable when the shove comes from a player you cover with a fat bounty. Calling ranges against short stacks widen — sometimes dramatically.

• You cover your opponent → their bounty enters the math → you call wider.
• They cover you → no bounty to win, and your own head attracts calls → shove tighter.
• Two short stacks behind → everyone wants their bounty: your bluffs lose value.

What is a bounty worth in chips?

That's THE question of the format, and eyeballing it is expensive. A bounty's value depends on your stack (the shorter you are, the more the bounty weighs against your chips), the tournament stage and the structure. Early in a PKO, a starting bounty is worth roughly a third of a starting stack in extra equity; late, accumulated bounties can justify calls that look insane from the rail. The PokGenius KO calculator does exactly this conversion — bounty into chips, based on the tournament's actual state — so your decisions rest on a number, not a feeling.

Early vs late: two different games

Early on, bounties are small and equal: play close to a standard MTT with slightly more aggression against covered short stacks. As the tournament progresses, bounties grow and the game drifts away from standard MTT play: head-hunting becomes a genuine profit source, and classic ICM has to coexist with bounty value. The most profitable seat in the format: big stack at a table of medium stacks carrying fat bounties.
