Heads-Up Poker: One-on-One Strategy (and Why It Teaches You Everything)

Heads-up is poker's purest format: two players, nowhere to hide, a decision every hand. It's also tournament players' greatest blind spot — you arrive exhausted, playing for the biggest pay jump of your life, having never studied it. This article fixes that: the specific rules, the ranges, and the game plan.

Why heads-up teaches you everything

With two players, you play EVERY hand — not one in four. Each hand asks every question in poker: open or not, continue or not, extract or control. One hour of heads-up contains more decisions than an evening at a full table; it's the game's best laboratory, and it's why the great duels forged the world's best players.

The special rule: position flips preflop

Heads-up, the button posts the SMALL blind and acts FIRST preflop — but LAST on every other street. It's the only table where the button opens the dance: don't get caught off guard. The strategic consequence: the button remains the golden seat (guaranteed postflop position), and it attacks almost every hand.

The ranges explode

• On the button: open 70 to 85% of hands — yes, eight in ten. Your worst heads-up hand beats the average opposing hand too often to fold.
• In the big blind: defend very wide — folding more than a third of your hands to an open is gifting blinds on repeat.
• Hand values climb a full notch: a medium pair plays like a big pair, a weak ace becomes a value hand, king-high gets paid.

Aggression decides

With two players, nobody hits the flop two times out of three — whoever bets first collects all those orphaned pots. Heads-up rewards constant initiative: frequent c-bets, wide 3-bets, permanent pressure. The player waiting for “a real hand” in this format bleeds blinds until he dies politely. Watch the flip side: an aggressive opponent gets countered with check-raises and wider calls — the weapons from our postflop guides.

Adjustments by stack depth

• Deep (40+ big blinds): full postflop play — button position is worth gold on every street.
• Medium (15-25 big blinds): 3-bets often become shoves, preflop pressure dominates.
• Short (under 15 big blinds): nearly pure push or fold — our charts apply as-is, with very wide ranges.
