SNGs, Spins, Satellites, Freerolls: Which Tournament Format Should You Play?

“Tournament” covers wildly different games: three timed minutes with three players, or twelve hours against ten thousand. Each format has its variance curve, its life rhythm and its key skills — and playing the wrong format for your profile costs more than any technical leak. The honest tour.

The MTT: the grail, at the price of variance

The multi-table tournament is the format of big scores — and long deserts: even a good player cashes only once every six tries. It demands time (hours per tournament), a properly sized bankroll (100+ buy-ins) and the full toolkit: phases, ICM, push or fold. We've dedicated a complete guide to it — the format's reference.

The SNG: the fixed-schedule laboratory

The sit and go starts as soon as the table fills and lasts under an hour: perfect when your time is counted. Its short structure gets you to short-stack play fast — it's the format that teaches push-or-fold and bubble ICM quicker than any other, with far gentler variance than MTTs (50-75 buy-ins suffice).

Spins: the three-player jackpot

Three players, 25-blind stacks, a randomly drawn prize pool that can multiply the buy-in a thousandfold: the spin is poker's fastest, most addictive format. Strategically it's hyper-turbo heads-up/3-max — very wide ranges, permanent push or fold, zero room for patience. The jackpot variance demands a serious bankroll (100+ buy-ins) and steel nerves: our tilt guide is nowhere more useful than here.

Satellites: buying a ticket, not a prize pool

The satellite awards seats to a bigger tournament — and changes ONE rule that changes everything: tenth place pays exactly as much as first. At the end of a satellite the goal is no longer to accumulate but to SURVIVE: you fold monster hands you'd snap-play anywhere else. It's ICM pushed to the extreme — the format that punishes most cruelly those who haven't understood it.

Freerolls: the free school (with its limits)

Free entry, real winnings: the freeroll is the risk-free doorway. Its flaw is its field: with nobody having paid, the early phases are a festival of fanciful all-ins — play tight, let the foam dissipate, and real poker starts midway. Excellent for building a micro-bankroll from zero; poor for learning fundamentals against opponents who occasionally fold.
